The European REACH directive (Restriction, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulates the cadmium content of all types of jewellery and hair accessories.

The cadmium content of each individual part must be less than 0.01% / 100 parts per million (ppm) / 100 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) by weight. Due to this low level of cadmium allowed by the REACH Directive, testing for cadmium content is out by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) which is sufficiently sensitive to provide accurate results.
