The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office is pleased to announce new improved reporting of results for their
unique Quick Nickel Release test.

The Quick Nickel Release (2011) test is a UKAS accredited test, unique to The Birmingham Assay Office, it is
quicker and
cheaper than the full Nickel Release reference test and has been validated by significant data and approved by most UK fashion and jewellery retailers
. In the majority of cases (more than 98.8%), passing the âQuick Nickel testâ indicates that items will pass EN 1811: 2011 / EN 12472: 2009 and comply with the Nickel regulation cited in REACH. This is an acceptable level of certainty from a scienti?c point of view.
Until now the Laboratory has reported results for the Quick Nickel Release test as either â
PASSâ or â
INCONCLUSIVEâ and did not identify which articles were likely to fall into the âNO DECISIONâ category when subjected to EN1811: 2011. Due to a move by customers to regard items that fall into the âNO DECISIONâ category as âcompliantâ the team in The Laboratory has developed the test further to deliver three categories of results:
PASS, NO DECISION or
LIKELY TO FAIL.

PASS â Items that are reported under this category are likely to comply with the metal release limit detailed in the Nickel Regulations and so no further testing is needed.
NO DECISION â Items that are reported under this category are likely to come under the âNo Decisionâ category of the metal release limit detailed in the Nickel Regulations. For customers who are accepting âno decisionâ results as compliant this may mean that no further testing is needed.
LIKELY TO FAIL - Items that are reported under this category are not likely to comply with the metal release limit detailed in the Nickel Regulations.
This change will affect Quick Nickel reports released From Monday 30th September 2013.
Prices for the improved Quick Nickel release test will remain the same and the turnaround time is still just 5 working days.
