The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office held its first Understanding Product Safety for Fashion Accessories course on Wednesday 26th June to a sold out audience! This one day course offers basic level training for jewellery technologists and costume jewellery and fashion accessories buyers who wish to understand new and current EU and USA product legislation and testing requirements BEFORE supplying product for sale to consumers.

The courseÂ began withÂ an invaluable overview of the current market for precious and non precious metals and accessories before focusingÂ on Nickel, Lead and Cadmium, including why each metal is harmful and the current testing regulations.

The course also covered the range of testing available at The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office, how to request tests and how to complete specific test forms.

In the afternoon, delegates learnt about chemical testing requirements covered by legislation and they had the chance to examine and test sample products as part of the course.

The day was rounded off with aÂ question and answer session with Dippal Manchanda, Technical Director for The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office who answered any queries that the delegates had.

TheÂ course was delivered by industry experts from The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay officeÂ sharing invaluable knowledge and experience from the UKAS accredited Laboratory at the Birmingham Assay Office.

The Course provided 7 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Activity and delegatesÂ were presented with a certificate at the end of the day.
