EXPERT ANALYSIS ACROSS A RANGE OF SECTORS

It’s a Big Day today – need our branded breakfast cereal and that’s for sure.  Michael Allchin, Marion Wilson and Marie Brennan are off to the House of Commons to join the British Jewellers Association as they celebrate their 125 year Anniversary.  L-R Michael Allchin - Assay Master & Chief Executive, Marion Wilson - Marketing Director, Marie Brennan - Business Relations Manager The Birmingham Assay Office It is 125 years to the day since the first Committee of the Birmingham Jewellers and Silversmiths’ Association was elected and the organisation eventually became national in 1946. The first elected Chairman in 1887 was Charles Green and his Great Grandson Tom, now Chairman of the family business, will be there today along with past Presidents and Chairmen of the Association. The birth of the organisation was driven by a severe recession, fashion steeringthe public away from wearing precious metal jewellery and businesses failing as a result.  Sound familiar?    At this afternoon’s reception, hosted by local MP Gisela Stuart, Michael Allchin will make his “maiden” speech at the House of Commons and highlight the many parallels throughout the 125 year history of the BJA.  There are recurring problems such as the theft of precious metal and the industry’s susceptibility to economic crises. But there is also a recurring theme of the BJA stepping in to lobby on behalf of its members, with some significant success, from fighting against the restriction of gold supply during World War II to the abolition of Purchase tax – which ran as high as 125% - during the 1950’s. After Michael’s speech the invited guests, will see the much anticipated Diamond Jubilee Brooch , due to be presented to HM Queen Elizabeth next week. More news on that to follow.
