We have been delighted to welcome Trading Standards Officers from across the UK this week for a one-day bespoke course on Hallmarking. Some 20 delegates attended from Plymouth City Council, Oldham Council, Ceredigion County Council, Leicestershire County Council, Sandwell Council, Surrey Council, Worcestershire Regulatory Services, Herefordshire Council and Warwickshire County Council. It was a privilege for us to work alongside our colleagues in trading standards during the training day as consumer protection is at the heart of what we do here at the Assay Office.
The delegates had different levels of experience in Hallmarking and took part in training that included sessions on the history of Hallmarking, understanding current legislation and how to identify Hallmarks on new and second hand jewellery. They also had an introduction to the new Gold Standard for buying scrap gold and silver (

The group also had the chance to visit the Hallmarking floor at the Birmingham Assay Office, which is not usually open to the public, and âhave a goâ at Hallmarking.
Delegates were able to use the training course as part of their CPD (Continuing Professional Development) requirements.
The delegates really enjoyed the day, commenting that it was hands-on, very informative and that they would recommend colleagues to attend. We look forward to welcoming more Trading Standards Officers to the Assay Office in the future!
