This year the National Association of Goldsmiths celebrates 25 years of their Registered Valuer scheme. Reformulated into the Institute of Registered Valuers (IRV) in 2009, the Registered Valuer scheme recognises and rewards professional, qualified valuers. The IRV conference which takes place in Loughborough in September has become one of the highlights of the jewellery year, a three day weekend crammed full of workshops, seminars, lectures and of course socialising. The Birmingham Assay Office fully supports the drive to ensure valuers are suitably qualified and are once again sponsoring the event. Safeguard Silver specialist Craig O’ Donnell will deliver a workshop which challenges the myth of poor quality “Brummagem” goods. Appropriately, in the year when “Birmingham Made Me” is showcasing the high quality design and innovation of Midlands made goods, Craig’s interactive talk is entitled ‘It’s Not All Brummagem!’ Craig will explore and demonstrate good quality manufacture and design produced by Midland based silversmiths aside from the mass produced wares for which Birmingham is well known. He will illustrate his point by inviting delegates to examine selected items from the private collection of The Birmingham Assay Office.
