The Assay Office was formed in 1773 as a result of a successful campaign led by Birmingham industrialist, entrepreneur and silversmith Matthew Boulton. It is the largest assay office in the world and continues to carry out its statutory duty of hallmarking articles manufactured in platinum, gold, silver and palladium. Four speakers explore the Quarter’s history, heritage, contemporary crafts and jewellery and silver manufacturing.

Dr Jean Debney completed a degree in Glass, before teaching CDT in local schools and running projects encouraging young people to aspire to careers in engineering. She writes about the industrial history of the Black Country and Birmingham. Her book on the history of the Jewellery Quarter will be published this year.

Sally Hoban is Heritage and Training Officer at Birmingham Assay Office and also works as a design, antiques and art consultant. She has written Miller's Collecting Modern Design and is researching for a PhD at the University of Birmingham on women designers of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the Midlands. Dr Connie Wan recently completed a PhD at the University of Birmingham on the Lines Family of artists. She works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and co-ordinates the research seminars for the Friends of the Centre for West Midlands History: www.cwmh.bham.ac.uk
