REACH legislation restricting the use of hazardous substances should be common knowledge within the jewellery industry, at least for those wishing to trade within the EU.
However, yet again RAPEX - the European Commission's rapid alert system for dangerous products - has highlighted offenders, in their final report for 2017, still manufacturing jewellery containing concerning levels of lead and cadmium.
Although it is encouraging to see that the EC continues to be diligent in its continuous audit of the European jewellery industry, it is perhaps shocking that breaches continue to be found.
Two items, identified as failures under the REACH regulations, were highlighted in the 22nd December 2017 report: a ring containing nearly 40% cadmium (by weight) and a necklace containing high levels of both lead and cadmium.
As these manufacturers and any associated retailers will have been advised, ignorance is not an excuse when it comes to REACH violations. Prevention is always better than cure.
