The recent interview on BBC’s Watchdog during which Claudia Winkleman re-lived her daughter's terrible Halloween ordeal, is a stark reminder of the horrific consequences that can occur if toys and dressing up costumes are not safe. Claudia’s daughter Matilda, aged eight, was left with severe burns when her Halloween costume caught fire during a party and her tights “melted into her skin.”
Compliance with legal requirements is essential to avoid such accidents. AnchorCert Analytical would like to remind you of the flammability tests that we can offer to ensure your products and your customers are safe!
It is a legal requirement to ensure toys and dress-up costumes are tested to EN71 part 2, Flammability. This is stipulated within the Toy Directive 2009/48/EC.
The EN71-2 regulation looks at a number of different factors which could lead to an injury to a child due to flammability. These include determining the presence of any flammable materials that are prohibited in children's play things, how long the item burns for and how quickly flames spread across it. Different types of items have different compliance rates.
AnchorCert Analytical is able to carry out flammability testing for the following products:
AnchorCert Analytical is UKAS accredited to carry out EN71-2 testing in our on-site fully equipped state of the art laboratory here in Birmingham.
AnchorCert Analytical is also UKAS accredited for testing azo-dyes, phthalates, packaging, EN71-3 and other tests associated with Toy Safety and the REACH Regulation.
