In 2015 Assay Office Birmingham will take a giant step in it's history, moving to a new, purpose built facility in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
The move demonstrates the confidence and commitment of one of Birmingham’s oldest businesses as it continues to innovate and invest for the future.
Founded by an Act of Parliament in 1773, the Assay Office still carries out it's statutory duty of testing and hallmarking precious metal but has widened its scope considerably in the past decade, now offering assessment, testing, authentication and valuation of precious metals, jewellery, watches, fashion accessories, gemstones, leathers and textiles. It's independence, integrity and expertise and the enthusiasm of it's staff set it apart from many of it's competitors. Services offered include measurement of restricted elements and substances such as nickel, lead, cadmium, azo dyes and formaldehyde to ensure items comply with international Consumer Product Safety legislation. A full portfolio of precious metal analysis including melt and assay is also available.
This significant move will enable Assay Office Birmingham to offer better facilities to customers in terms of efficiency and security and much better working conditions for staff. It will provide a centre of excellence to the local trade and make the important private heritage collections more accessible to researchers and enthusiasts. The move is crucial to future business development, offering a more flexible and environmentally friendly facility to support the ambitions of Assay Office Birmingham as it continues to grow it's portfolio of innovative services to the jewellery, precious metal, gemstone and other associated trades.
