Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Heritage at Risk Survey

Volunteers Needed!

Do you want to take part in a survey of the Grade II listed buildings in the Jewellery Quarter, helping to produce a register of the buildings at risk?

There are 207 listed buildings in the Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area, some in a severe state of dereliction. Birmingham City Council working in partnership with Birmingham Conservation Trust has been commissioned by English Heritage to carry out a pilot survey of the Grade II listed buildings in the Quarter.

The survey will provide, for the first time, a systematic assessment of the state of repair of historic buildings in the Quarter, enabling those most at risk to be prioritised. It will assist the Jewellery Quarter Development Trust (JQDT) in it's work and feed into the creation of a JQ Neighbourhood Plan. And it will help English Heritage develop and test methods and software for their national project to extend the Heritage at Risk (HAR) Register to cover all Grade II listed buildings.

Birmingham Conservation Trust is seeking to recruit enthusiastic volunteers to undertake the survey of the Jewellery Quarter. The work will take place between January and March 2015. Experience of recording historic buildings will help but is not essential: training will be provided in survey methods and the software, and expert advice will be available.

Surveyors will generally work in teams of two or three, and will be paired to have complementary skills and experience. Volunteers will be able to carry out the survey at times to best suit themselves, as long as the work is carried out within the overall project timetable. As well as survey of the buildings themselves, the project will also involve some desk-based research.
