The Fashion Accessories Catwalk at The Jewellery Show in Birmingham this week saw a first when two chemists from The Laboratory at The Birmingham Assay Office stepped out on the floor and "walked the walk" during a presentation by Chief Executive, Michael Allchin, entitled "Keep Your Business Safe - Making Sense of Product Safety Legislation"
Steve and Suki, who are more used to wearing white lab coats, helped Michael demonstrate the types of costume jewellery and fashion accessory items that need testing before being sold on the UK market, especially in light of existing and new product safety legislation that all companies who supply products to consumers that could come into direct and prolonged contact with skin must comply to.
Although some of the images shown during the presentation were quite gruesome - an allergic reaction to nickel is not easy viewing and will leave the sufferer permanently sensitised to this metal - the audience appreciated the informative and factual content.
