JEWELLERY

There is a legal requirement in the UK for all but the lightest precious metal jewellery to be hallmarked by an Assay Office, to guarantee its precious metal content. In addition to this fine and fashion jewellery, watches and fashion accessories are subject to increasing general product safety legislation.

The key legislation is the EU REACH (Restriction, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) Regulation which has various Annexes that relate specifically to jewellery.

REACH restricts many potentially hazardous substances. Those relevant to all parts of jewellery are nickel, lead and cadmium. Jewellery and accessories containing materials such as plastics, textiles, and leather will also need to comply with regulations controlling phthalates, azo dyes, formaldehyde, DMF and Chromium VI.  Further information about all of these requirements, and the services offered by AnchorCert Analytical to ensure products are compliant is available HERE.
